Nineth Montenegro
Is a congresswoman that is a member of the Alianza Nueva
Nacion(ANN) political party. She is the General Secretary of the ANN.
She is also the president of the Commission for Human Rights within
congress, where she has been a key participant. One of her biggest
achievements was revising the Ministry of Defense's budget and
uncovering that many of its officials have been involved in the loss of
more than 160 million dollars. Some of the awards that she has received
for her work in defense of human rights are: Carter Menill award,
1986. Lettelier Mofit award, 1986. Award given by the Pro human rights
association in Spain, 1989. Bruno Kreisiki award, 1988. Receiced the
Chicago "Key to the City", 1986. Received an Honorary Doctorate from
Elizabeth Town College.
Mario Polanco
Is the director of the Mutual Support Group (GAM) in Guatemala.
This is an organization that helps family members of victims of forced
disappearances. He has participated in international events in defense
and promotion of Human Rights. He was a part of the movement towards
peace in Guatemala through the Assembly of Civil Society. He has
published works regarding: continuing study of militarism, handling of
the national budget with emphasis on militarism, and was nominated for
the Rebook award.
Oscar Chacon
Oscar Chacón is an expert on immigrant rights that has dedicated
the past twenty yearsof his life to this cause. He has served as
director of Enlaces América since August of 2001. Enlaces America, a
project of the Chicago-based Heartland Alliance for Human Needs and
Human Rights, is dedicated to the empowerment of Latino immigrant
organizations in the U.S. committed to a just, dignified and
sustainable way of life for their communities in the U.S., as well as
in their countries of origin. Mr. Chacón serves currently as president
of the Salvadoran American National Network (SANN). He is also one of
the founding members of the National Alliance of Latin American and
Caribbean Communities (NALACC), an advocacy umbrella organization for
and by Latino and Caribbean immigrant-led organizations from around the
U.S. NALACC was established in May of 2004.
